In the mind of a dyslexic

First of all let me introduce myself! My name is Mario Karakatsanis, I am 35 years old, I am dyslexic and yes I feel good! You will tell me now and why shouldn’t I feel, I have dyslexia, not a serious illness!

By Marios Karakatsanis

Well, this is exactly why I felt the need to write this article. Because no one can understand the strange world that a dyslexic has in his mind. Especially, when he does not know about his problem!

But let’s take things from the beginning. What is dyslexic? Not the one who has a speech impediment as many people think.

Let’s see what psychologist Lyrika Slavounou says:

“Dyslexia as a concept is a medical term that diagnoses the learning disorder that causes problems in reading and writing words. In dyslexia , just because we have treatment , but it does not mean it is a disease. It is however, if diagnosed early, n’ treated as more symptoms bring as a result of dyslexia . Our goal is to provide immediate prognosis in order to treat it as soon as possible.

Dyslexia has symptoms , which the sooner we identify , the sooner we treat. Dyslexia , we must be clear that it is neither a disease nor is it communicable. The treatment of , therefore belongs to a dysfunction of neurological causes and hereditary. The man who is born with dyslexia , will also die with it. Just as simply, the man who was born to write with his left hand and once it was reprehensible and he was subjected to great violence to change his hand, so too, he was born left-handed and will die left-handed.

Just as we are born with blue eyes , the same is true for dyslexia. Certainly, dyslexia , affects the lives of people who experience it. They live in disadvantage, on the margins, because they have difficulty, learning-wise, to progress through stages of school development like other children. The failure they receive is not their responsibility and yet it affects their psyche strongly. The biggest consideration that we as experts ought to take into account plus the others , is on what scale of form dyslexia is on. Mild? Average? Heavy?

I have mentioned , many times and repeated publicly on every occasion , that parents , leaving the maternity ward , should be given , a basic book of information , so that they are not abandoned in the infinity of their new , role , with its many demands. Just the same as before pre-school age, to provide them again with a book containing the basic problems they will face again, in a general context.

But specifically dyslexic people , have many gifts and supreme abilities , excellent perception of space and this element is misleading. Their speech does not need speech therapy and so the diagnosis is slow to be made and valuable time is wasted. Another minus for their diagnosis is that there is no question of mental retardation , but because the dyslexic writes and reads differently , it disorientates the diagnosis of dyslexia with the diagnosis of mental retardation.

The dyslexic has qualities that we do not have, nor are we ever able to acquire. The images in his mind are vivid and vivid. They are overwhelmed with creative thoughts and have a highly sensitized emotional world full of positivity.

Dyslexia , I want to stress here is not a learning difficulty , it is simply the problem that prevents learning difficulty! So , as a problem or syndrome we experts treat dyslexia. But because people with dyslexia are more efficient in their oral language and intelligence , with highly creative thinking , the only place where dyslexia can be detected is by informed education specialists.

However , the intelligence test is necessary to rule out the possibility of mental retardation. Many children with dyslexia , with outstanding intelligence , have been destroyed by a misdiagnosis of how they were mentally retarded. Their peculiarity is that they think a lot with pictures, but it does not mean that we will exclude the possibility that they also lag behind in oral language, some of the cases of dyslexic children. The main characteristic of a mentally retarded child or a dyslexic child , is that the dyslexic child lags in either speech or writing , never in both as a mentally retarded child does.

But how easy is it for a dyslexic person to live with this syndrome? What are the implications that it has to deal with?

Many famous people have had dyslexia , such as Einstein , John Lennon , Picasso , Leonardo da Vinci , and many others. In cases of dyslexia, the ignorance of its existence kills and so now at this point I will list the main symptoms. Dyslexia is essentially Learning Disability in writing and reading. The factors mentioned above are both hereditary and genetic. That is why the PAVLIDIS TEST is compulsory.

THE MAIN SYMPTOMS of dyslexia are , that people with the syndrome are excellent at building things because they think in pictures, creative and inventive. But we also have the other symptoms , such as having difficulty in reading ( they are tortured to read and they read , very slowly and with many mistakes, often changing order and words.) A serious symptom that is prevalent in dyslexia is the difficulty in transferring their thoughts to the written word. They find it difficult to learn foreign languages , they lag behind in subjects such as writing, literature and syntax. Pre-education for people with dyslexia is like suffering , as is memorization . They have distraction and difficulty concentrating.”

Now that we have cleared things up, and we are on the same cognitive footing, let me once again unfold my thoughts to you. Should dyslexics be the outcast of school society? If you think things are not like that, ask your children a question! How many of them have seen, if not been themselves the recipients or worse the instigators of harassment of a child whose handwriting resembles that of a 3 year old who has just discovered a pencil? Who is, say, 12 years old and writes home as “spit”, or who is scolded by his teacher for being caught repeatedly off-topic for lack of concentration? Hearing for the first time in his ears the characteristic line “Where are you grazing, you fry!” which only from the mouth of the late Dionysis Papagiannopoulos makes us laugh! And behind, dozens of innocent little children laughing and laughing without knowing what harm they are causing at that moment.

Leaving the poor kid wondering what went wrong…

Because as for you, it is perfectly normal to live in the world you live in, with your beautiful handwriting and your calligraphy, with being able to concentrate on what you do, giving 100% of yourself, thinking that everyone is like that, or at least should be. So the dyslexic thinks that everyone is like him! He doesn’t know anything else! He hasn’t seen anything else!

And if you think that it stops in the school years, then you are sadly mistaken! Things are barely getting worse! Because he has become a 2 meter long manacle and his letters remain those of a 3 year old who discovered the pencil for the first time in his life…

Who is embarrassed to fill out a job application , lest they see his spelling mistakes and think he is illiterate. Where for the same reason he resents writing a greeting card to his girlfriend. Why? Because he still remembers those laughs of his classmates behind his back, thus avoiding to express his love or feelings through the written word. But the words are forgotten, taken away by the wind, leaving behind once again a young man wondering, “But what the hell went wrong? If I did what everyone else did… Why should I be different?” But that thought would be gone as quickly as it came. Because a dyslexic can’t even focus on his own thoughts.

So that’s why parents should focus a little more on the signs that their children are showing. Instead of finding the easy solution by saying that their children are bored, not studious, and that their minds are always elsewhere, should they see if something else is going on? Because if you expect the teachers to tell you that they noticed something, you are saved!

All this information was for you, living in your own perfect world. But for the dyslexics, who may be reading me right now, I have something different to say:

Never give up, write non-stop, writing is our own clear sky that we are deprived of seeing by keeping ourselves imprisoned. Break the bonds that hold you back!

This text is deliberately copied without a trace of editing. Except that the electronic copywriter was self-correcting and believe me it was too much! Because as I told you at the beginning…

My name is Mario, I’m dyslexic and I feel good!
